Diagnostic Testing

WIAT-III: The gold standard

WIAT-III: The gold standard

Testing to choose the right literacy intervention

It may be difficult to know if your child needs literacy intervention in writing, decoding, reading fluency or something else without any data.

When will diagnostics be recommended?

In order to match your child with the best intervention,

What does the assessment involve?

The WIAT-II covers a wide range of academic areas, providing a clear understanding of a student’s achievements. By comparing the results to same-age peers, it helps identify if the student is performing at, above, or below the expected level. This information is crucial for understanding the child’s unique academic needs and tailoring effective support strategies.

How long does it take?

The assessment typically takes less than one hour, depending on the child’s needs. Breaks may be incorporated for students to maintain focus and motivation throughout the process.

How is the test conducted?

Parents are usually not present during the assessment to ensure their child can focus without distraction. However, the examiner takes care to create a positive, comfortable environment, engaging the student with enjoyable activities of interest to them during 'brain breaks'.

What is included in the assessment?

The cost of the assessment is $200 p/h and includes the following:

  • Pre-assessment explanation and opportunity for parents to ask questions.
  • Administration of the relevant tests.
  • Scoring of the test.
  • An intervention plan, taking into account your needs and budget and the relevant school context.
  • A feedback session with parents to discuss the results and next steps.

Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition (WIAT-III)

The WIAT-III is a comprehensive, one-on-one assessment designed to evaluate the academic skills of children and adolescents across key domains: reading, written language, mathematics, and oral language.

Why should I consider the WIAT-III?

The WIAT-III offers crucial insights into a student’s academic strengths and areas needing support. By comparing their performance with same-age peers, it helps determine if a student is performing at, above, or below expected levels for their age.

Additionally, the WIAT-III is often utilised by psychologists in identifying Specific Learning Difficulties. If a child undergoes the assessment, followed by six months of targeted, evidence-based intervention with limited progress, a repeat of the WIAT-III may be warranted, and a potential diagnosis can be explored.
